Books My Son Read in 2nd Grade

Sharing is good karma:

I created this category to save you from mistakes I made when I chose books from the large 8 – 12 age category on Amazon for my daughter only to realize later that she was either not mature enough to read them or they contained difficult vocabulary for her. If you are looking for safer bets this is it. My son read the books on this list in 2nd grade and he was fine with them unless noted.

I suggest you also check the category My Daughter in 2nd Grade or My Son in 1st Grade. My son is a good reader and a lot of the books he read last year are perfectly suitable for second graders as well.

Always check the previous age categories to see if there are titles my kids haven’t read yet. Many books have a wide age range and I tried to place them in the lowest possible age category (i.e. in the age group when I thought kids could read the book on their own, not listen to it.)

♥♥♥Spirit Animals For a list of books in this series click here. He called it the best audio book ever. He listened to the first three over the summer on his iPod and when we got back home, he read #4 without a problem. He started reading #5 but 20 pages into the book he said it was not as exciting as the other books. So we put the rest on hold until later this year. These books are probably at a 3rd grade level and are not the easiest.

Power of the Fire Dragon (Dragon Masters #4) My son was excited the fourth book of his favorite series from 1st grade came out over the summer and finished reading it in no time.

♥♥♥The Stonekeeper Another graphic novel, my son read it in one sitting and asked for sequels. It turned out his sister (age 9) also fell in love with this series and both of them read all books that came out so far and were really sad to learn that they have to wait for the 7th until next year. For a list of titles in the Amulet series click here. Before you give this to your child to read, read a few reviews–if your child is very sensitive, you might want to wait because of the content (parents die in the first book I think). My daughter usually does not like any stories with something so serious happening but she was totally okay with it here and devoured all the books.

Fablehaven I think we listened to 3 books so far. they are very long. The latest tip!! My husband recently told me about a website where kids can learn programming in a fun way. My daughter (9) tried it 3 weeks ago and loves it. If your child is craving to be on the computer but you don’t want him/her to waste time by playing nonsense games, give it a try.

Create stories, games, and animations

If you don’t have time to make it for the Story Time at your library, you can always find very nice stories online. Just click on a title and let someone else read the story to your child.

Books on Science Experiments for Kids

When I was putting together the lists for my website, my daughter was waving this book in front of my face:
Smart Kids Science
smart kids science

I picked it up at a dollar store somewhere and it had sat on our shelf for quite a while until my daughter noticed it one day and started flipping through it. She was really excited about some of the experiments in the book that were quite simple. Both she and my son did a few experiments with their Dad already. I don’t know if it is worth the money on Amazon but I have discovered a book with a lot of great reviews that I ordered for Christmas. It is pretty cheap and I think my kids will be thrilled when they see it because they love to do science experiments at home. You’d have to rely on other people-s reviews here because I can tell you more in January or February after we use the book.

Science Experiments Kits

My kids got the following two kits for Christmas and have enjoyed doing several experiments so far. The nice thing about this is that I didn’t need to supervise. My daughter (8) managed just fine without my help.

Science on the Web

As I was reading the School Library Journal, I have come across a post about a fabulous website for older kids (ages 13 and up). Sparticle claims to be the best science on the web and since I read a very good review, I think it is definitely worth checking out. My kids are only 6 and 8 so you just have to take my word for it and give it a try if you have older kids. It is FREE.

It will probably help you to read the review first.

Fun with Dry Ice
dry ice

Many of you probably know about experiments with dry ice. I didn’t think I’d post it here but we have had so much fun with dry ice three times already that I just want to post it here to give you a tip for fun afternoon or for an activity at a birthday party. We used dry ice at two birthday parties and I did dry ice experiments at my son’s school on his “Star of the Week” day–every time it was a huge success.

The experiments are pretty easy. You just need to buy dry ice, have warm water, some dish detergent, a bowl or glass, maybe a plastic cup. Just be aware that if you get it the day before you actually do the experiments because it evaporates even in a cooler so you will have much less than what you bought. I always buy the pellets because they are easy to handle and I don’t have to use any tools to chip off the ice.

You can google dry ice experiments and get plenty of results but it is enough if you watch the following two videos.

Awesome Dry ice Experiments

8 Dry Ice Experiments Compilation (I did not do all in case you are wondering)

Kids always had fun with the smoke and loved the never ending bubbles. My kids spent two hours playing with them, using bowls and spoons yesterday afternoon when I brought home the leftover dry ice from school. They had a blast. I think that kids in school were pretty excited too. They loved touching the bubbles and popping them (smokes comes out of them). All that fun was definitely worth the $10 I paid for the dry ice.

Cool and Easy Science Experiments

Balloon Rocket

We only had round balloons at home and they worked fine. We did the experiment in the yard. Then our kids tried the experiment at a friend’s birthday party with the long balloons and they work a bit better but don’t give up on this experiment if you only have the regular kind.

Bubble Bomb We added food coloring to the water to make it more fun.

Dancing Raisins

We have only tried raisins so far. Our raisins were pretty big and we found out that they danced better when we tore them into smaller pieces.

Mentos Diet Coke Geyser We used the tube (bought it on Amazon) to make the experiment easier for us and less messy.

The Leak-proof Bag science experiment

We did it in the yard, which paid off because the kids pushed some pencils all the way through and we had a small water fountain (they loved it too!)

Walking Water We used 6 cups (2 rows of 3 cups each).

The non-fiction section at the library contains so much that it is hard to choose something that would catch my kids’ interest. Researching the books online is helping us to bring home nonfiction books that my kids enjoy a lot. I will post them here as we read them.

You may have an older kid at home or perhaps we don’t read a certain type of nonfiction books your children like. Or maybe you would like to read the books before I post them here (I certainly have a list of books tha are worth checking out but we can only manage to read a few every week) If you’d like to find very good nonfiction books for all ages on your own, here are two blogs to help you.

Sniffer Dogs How Dogs (and Their Noses) Save the World
Recommended age is 10 and up and I would agree with that because the chapters were too long and too scientific for both my kids even though I did the reading. As soon as we started it was clear that even the vocabulary was too difficult for them. I think it is  great book but good for older kids for independent reading. I went page by page scanning the text and basically telling my kids the most important message of each chapter, showing them the pictures. So now they know what I even didn’t that there are dogs trained to save kids suffering from diabetes by warning them or their family members if their blood sugar level changes. You can find videos to this book here.

Poetry and Other Fun Books

Sharing is good karma:

I was afraid that some of these books would go unnoticed if they were a part of a long list. The following books are also great for a wide range of ages so it’s hard to place them in a certain list.

My kids love it when we sit down at the end of the day and read a few poems together.  I was actually surprised how often they ask to read them instead of a story. Then I listened to an excerpt (click on the audio from the film) from the audio recording by Jim Trealease, author of The Read-Aloud Handbook  and learned that the book kids most often steal from libraries is a poetry book by Shel Silverstein: Where the Sidewalk Ends. Unbelievable, right?

Look for other books by Shel Silverstein, they all have great reviews.

Here is one that is a fabulous book for little kids:

My kids also liked A Bad Case of the Giggles that I picked up at our library. They like silly poems. See more ratings and reviews here.

The following two paperbacks are not poetry at all but I had to list them somewhere because my kids love them and when they are together with friends, they like to take them out and read the jokes together. They were both cheap, and I think worth the money spent when I hear the kids giggling. My daughter left the first one somewhere and was so sad that I ordered it again.

I feel like I am repeating myself but I can’t help it. Before you explore this list, check out the previous age categories first because those lists contain a lot of books for this age group but perhaps they could be enjoyed by younger kids already so the books are there and not here.

I am perfectly aware of the fact that kids mature at a different pace and that you might not agree with the recommended age. My kids are only 6 and 8 right now so it is hard for me to take a guess when they could read the following books. I checked other websites and went with their recommendations.

I only listed some books so far. I will work on this category soon. Take a look at the titles first and then you can find more information under the following links:

Great Reads for Kids 10 and up (5th Grade)

Sharing is good karma:

I feel like I am repeating myself but I can’t help it. Before you explore this list, check out the previous age categories first because those lists contain a lot of books for this age group but perhaps they could be enjoyed by an 8- or 9-year-old already so the book is there and not here. See lists for kids 9 and up, and what my kids read in earlier grades (My Daughter in 4th Grade, My Son in 4th Grade). I place the books in the category that I think is closest to the earliest age the book can be read independently. Most of the books are in a wide age range and can be enjoyed by kids from 8 – 12. Your child will not feel s/he is reading something babyish. On the contrary, I am sometimes not sure if the books in my lists shouldn’t be placed in a higher age range. Definitely start there first. You could miss great books if you didn’t.

Important: Once my daughter or son read a book from this list, I place it on the list My Daughter in 5th Grade or My Son in 5th Grade it is no longer here. For safer bets and the best books, check out those lists as well.

The School for Good and Evil  For a list of books in this series click here. Yet another book that people read trying to find the next Harry Potter. Some  loved it, some hated it. It has plenty of good reviews so it’s up to you to decide whether you want to give it a whirl or not.

The Little Prince  If you type the title in the Amazon search window, you will get several editions of The Little Prince with umpteen reviews. After having read through many of them, I decided to link it to the original translation hoping that you will be able to find it at your local library. We have the book at home translated into Czech so I am not sure we will ever read it in English but so many people are upset about Richard Howard’s translation (modern language) that if I were to choose an English translation I would go with the one by Katherine Woods.
