Other Books for First Graders

Sharing is good karma:
FacebooktwitterpinterestlinkedinmailFacebooktwitterpinterestlinkedinmail

This is a list of book appropriate for first graders who are ready to read more challenging books than easy readers. I have a separate list containing other series not mentioned here in the section My Daughter in 1st Grade. My son is now in 1st grade (November 2014) and I use the following list I put together as a reference because it is sometimes hard to find chapter books that interest young kids but are not daunting. I also added series for girls my daughter did not read.

If you are looking for more books, check out Random House Stepping Stones series. Also look for Trophy Chapter Books and Puffin Chapters.

The books on my lists are tips from different websites and discussion forums. Read the reviews if you’d like to learn more about the titles. Every child is unique. Books my kids liked might not be an enjoyable read for your child and the other way around. Most of these books are great for any child, no matter if it is a girl or a boy.

When my son reads a book and likes it I move it to my list My Son in 1st Grade so check out that list as well. You will no longer find it here. I can only trust other people about the books listed here but if my son actually reads a book from this category and likes it, I know that the tip was good and feel better about recommending it to other parents. I hope you will find the tips useful and will not waste time searching for a good read for your child at his/her level.

The books toward the end of the list are probably harder and I am saving them for the second half/end of 1st grade.

Little Wolf’s Book of Badness Read more reviews here. If your child likes it, give the Awesome Animals series by this author (Ian Whybrow) a shot. The letters are smaller and my son did not want to read this in January in 1st grade. I started reading it to him but he said it was kind of boring.
little wolfs book of badness

My Big Fat Zombie Goldfish This book has mixed reviews but mostly from the parents (because it contains a lot of name calling, etc.) but they all agree that their boys loved it. It is apparently geared toward boys and it is funny. It reminds me Junie B. Jones books a bit—a lot of people hate them because of the way Junie B. talks and behaves. I am trying to instill a love of reading in my son and if he reads a few books with a bit less appropriate behavior, I can deal with that. I can always talk to him about it. Check out the sequel Fins of Fury.

A Mouse Called Wolf and other stories by Dick King-Smith. Parents recommend them everywhere as read-alouds or for the kids to read on their own (but I am not sure about the reading level but we will try them). Update. I checked it out from the library in January (1st grade) and it is probably not for my son yet. I could have waited a few months and let him try it but I decided to read it to both my kids and they liked it.

Pippi Longstocking or The Pippi Longstocking 4-Book Set: Pippi Longstocking, Pippi Goes on Board, Pippi in the South Seas, and Pippi on the Run
pippi longstocking 1stgrade

I know that most people in the US know the author Astrid Lindgren because of Pippi Longstocking. But not everybody knows that she wrote several other fantastic books that are very popular with kids in Europe. We read most of them in Czech but I looked them up, checked the reviews (if the translation is good) and decided to share them with you. Among our favorites are The Children of Noisy Village (my daughter’s all-time favorite) but it is probably more suitable for kids 7 or 8 and up, not for a beginning reader (but a great read-aloud for younger kids). However, there are other titles that are easier so I added them to this list.

Books My Daughter Read in 1st Grade

Sharing is good karma:
FacebooktwitterpinterestlinkedinmailFacebooktwitterpinterestlinkedinmail

Okay, here’s the deal. My daughter is now in 3rd grade (Nov 2014). I am trying to recall everything she read but that’s not possible. She didn’t have problems finding books that would interest her so I did not do a major research to find appropriate books for her. However, my son is not going to read the girls’ series, and I started wondering what there is to read for an advanced reader in 1st grade.

I spent days researching books and series, and the result is my list under Other 1st Grade Books. It is a list that does not contain only titles for boys but for anybody who is ready for more challenging books than easy readers such as Level 3 or 4 books. I actually listed quite a few girls’ series there because I either didn’t know about them when my daughter was in 1st grade or she was not interested in them (she is not into fairies, princesses, etc.)

Books My Son Read in 1st Grade

Sharing is good karma:
FacebooktwitterpinterestlinkedinmailFacebooktwitterpinterestlinkedinmail

My son started 1st grade with easy readers that are in the section Beginning Readers. Check there first if your child is not ready for these books. If you are looking for more titles, check out the books my daughter read in 1st grade and the list Other Books for First Graders

To make it easier for my friends to look for books my son really LOVED, I added a heart () before the title for books that were a hit and two hearts if it was a big hit (meaning my son asking impatiently if I have more books from the series). That does not mean he did not like the books without a heart. A lot of them were nice and he enjoyed them too. But they were not the kind he would be asking for and read voluntarily several titles in a row (many times in one night).

♥♥ The Big Big Big Book of Tashi For a complete list of books in Tashi series click here. This is a FIND! Don’t miss this book especially if you have a little boy! I’ve read about girls being excited about it too! My son has about 15 books to choose from on the shelf to read and did not hesitate a second when I asked him to pick one. This looks like a very thick book for older kids but don’t let it fool you. Each page has a big picture and only a few sentences. There is a picture of a map at the beginning of the book and my son constantly follows Tashi’s journey there (Dragon’s Cave, Giant’s castle, Mountain of White Tigers etc.). He read 60 pages yesterday so as you can see the thickness of the book is not so bad. This is a big hit at home now, not to mention that my son was proudly showing to my husband that he is reading a VERY thick book like his older sister does. 🙂 Note: You don’t have to get the thick book if it is daunting for your child. The stories about Tashi’s adventures are available in separate books. I just chose one that contained more stories together. I also discovered a website about Tashi books.

The Great Big Enormous Book of Tashi As you can imagine my son fell in love with Tashi and refuses to read anything else until he has read all his adventures. You can either look for a boxed set or buy (or borrow from the library as we did) this book that contains 32 adventures. I just ordered this book for my son for Christmas because it looks like he will reread this one. He just asked if there is an audiobook about Tashi.

Books we read together or listened to

The Giggler Treatment My daughter did not read it on her own–I read it to both my kids and they liked it. It is an easy and short read–we read it in one night. I am sure it is a fun book to read independently but I think this one is a great read-aloud. Funny.
the giggler treatment

The Great Brain She did not read this book independently but because I knew she would never pick this one herself I chose it to read to both my kids. It is not the modern type of literature so I don’t know how many kids would really enjoy reading it on their own but both my kids loved it when I read it to them. I think it would depend on what kind of books your child likes. This one would be better for a boy for independent reading I think. Definitely more enticing for boys because the book is about boys.

The following is a list of books that I either read to my kids at the age of 5 and 6 or audiobooks my kids listened to at that age. The fabulous thing about a lot of these titles (not all in this list) is that older kids won’t be bored with them. If you are looking for a book to read to your children of different ages, many of these are a great choice.

To find excellent recommendations for other books to read aloud with your children, read my post The Case for Reading Aloud and Audiobooks.

Don’t forget to check out my post about free audiobooks online.

Here are books that my kids either read or books that were recommended on different websites for beginning readers. My kids read a lot of them in kindergarten but this list includes also books my son read right at the beginning of 1st grade.

I know that each library has a section on Easy Readers. It was a great resource at the beginning but as my kids started reading more, we ran out of titles they’d be interested in, and I often stood in front of those shelves looking for a book they would enjoy and couldn’t really find one. Since we have such a fabulous library network and can request items from other libraries, I just started looking for the titles online.

Here is a list of books my kids enjoyed reading. They are all real stories but written in a way to appeal to kids. The titles in this list are paperbacks, easy readers or longer books for elementary school kids. See more stories under the category Picture Books (About Famous People, History, etc.).

Please note that I just started this list so it is short. I will be adding more titles over the next few months.

My daughter (in 3rd grade) loves this series that we discovered this year. Jim Trelease suggests grades 2 – 5 as a read-aloud.

Like all parents, we too try to instill good values and certain character traits in our kids as much as possible. Sometimes things from school come up during our family conversations or we catch our kids telling a white lie. We always discuss it but I felt we were not doing enough.

The following is our recent find. It is geared toward children in grade school (definitely not younger). You can get books or CDs. We opted for the audio version to listen to in the car. The narrator can get on your nerves after a while so it is good to listen to the CD for an hour at most and take a break. We alternate this series with other fiction audio books. Otherwise it is well done and good for kids. Read the reviews if you need more information. We finished the first set and are listening to the middle ages now.

The Story of the World: History for the Classical Child: Volume 1: Ancient Times: From the Earliest Nomads to the Last Roman Emperor
The Story of the World

From our library I borrowed The Children’s Book of Virtues
the childrens book of virtues
It is a collection of fables, adaptations of fairy tales, true stories, and poems that illustrate virtues such as honesty, kindness, responsibility, etc. Our kids didn’t care for the poems much but liked the stories so I decided to find the DVDs based on the book at the library (see the section on educational DVDs).
As this title is a children’s version of The Book of Virtues I also looked for The Book of Virtues for Young People to read to my daughter.
book of virtues for young peopleI decided to read it aloud during lunch or dinner. The vocabulary is very difficult and I had to stop reading and explain some words to her because she would not have understood the meaning at all (she is 8 1/2 years old). I found myself paraphrasing the sentences all the time. Although I am sure she’d rather read a Harry Potter book, I believe that reinforcing our attempts at raising individuals with great values is important so I will select a chapter now and then to read to her. It is not a book that could be read at once and my kids will probably get more out of it as they grow older and more mature. I ordered our own copy so that we could just read a chapter any time we are in the mood for it. I found the review Lots of Virtues to Choose From on Amazon very helpful. It describes the difference between the “virtue” books. Maybe it will help you to choose the right one for you.
Big Questions from Little People: and Simple Answers from Great Minds
Big questions from little peopleHow does fire get on fire? Why do penguins live at the South Pole but not the North?  A fantastic book with a lot of questions, each answered on one or two pages in a way kids can understand. We are hooked. I checked it out from the library to see if it was worth it and we are definitely buying it. Read the reviews on Amazon or here.
They Stood Alone!: 25 Men and Women Who Made a Difference
they stood aloneWhile reading from a Larousse Kids’ Encyclopedia Who is it? (in Czech) I was wondering if there are some good books in English that would give my kids more insight into world history, culture, religion, or art, books about extraordinary people. We have read some picture books about famous people such as Albert Einstein but it was just a matter of luck whether I stumbled upon it or happened to see a review on Amazon. It never occurred to me to write the titles down so all my lists will be ongoing projects.
Last year I ordered They Stood Alone  because I felt my kids needed to hear about remarkable people who had the courage to follow their dreams and face the obstacles life threw at them. I think this is a book you need to own rather than borrow from a library because you cannot read all 25 stories at once. Although the writing is not complicated, the vocabulary used made it a bit difficult for my son (just turning 6 at that time) to follow and enjoy the story. My daughter liked it. We did not read it all but I will make a point of reading one chapter with them every two weeks.Since my son is not able to absorb the information in this book, a part of my project will be looking up picture books that would supplement each chapter so that both my kids remember the stories better. As soon as we start, I will create a separate entry here, listing each chapter and corresponding picture books.
A little History of the World
Little-History-WorldOur most recent addition to our library is Gombrich’s “A Little History of the World.”t is a history book written for kids that I discovered by chance while reading an article by Winston Sieck. I loved the reviews so I went ahead and ordered it. My husband is sort of a history buff so before anybody got a chance to flip through the book, he took it and started reading it. He says that it is going to be a bit hard for our son (6 ½) but our daughter (8 ½) would enjoy listening to it. I will probably wait a bit and rather start with mythology or books about famous people (They Stood Alone) because those are not as complex as history.Read the short article on how Winston Sieck looked for good history videos that could accompany the book and would appeal to kids. He posted his list in a pdf file on his website. When we decide to read this history book to our kids, I am going to follow his advice and let you know how we liked his choices. I may also try to find picture books to supplement each chapter of this book. Check back in a few months for any updates.

Encyclopedias and Almanacs

A few weeks ago, on back-to-school night, kids in my daughter’s class had a multiple choice quiz ready for their parents. Mine was especially hard because my daughter did not list one correct answer with two unlikely ones. Asking about her favorite subject in school, favorite meal, favorite activity, etc., she’d choose three of her favorite things to do so I had a tough time picking the right one. I had to think about whether she’d rather play a board game with us or look at the National Geographic Magazine with her Dad. Guess which one was the correct answer.

Here are some books she’s had for a while and keeps coming back to them (the first three are her favorites):

National Geographic Kids Almanac 2014

I saw this book at my sister-in-law’s in Prague, translated into Czech. My daughter has asked some questions about different religions in the past so I decided to order it. It gives a nice overview of all the major religions in the world. It is a book we read together.

My First List

Sharing is good karma:
FacebooktwitterpinterestlinkedinmailFacebooktwitterpinterestlinkedinmail

My daughter takes after my husband in a lot of things. As a little girl she’d prefer more realistic books with kids rather than animals and as she grew older she developed a love for non-fiction. I know, there are plenty of non-fiction books on thousands of subjects but that is not what she likes to take off the shelf and read. She likes non-fiction books similar to encyclopedias and almanacs for kids, books that she can flip through and open anywhere and learn some interesting facts about how a window pane is made or who the gladiators were, how people live in Africa, etc.

I used to buy Larousse encyclopedias for kids translated from French to Czech. My daughter, however, does not pick Czech books voluntarily; she prefers to read in English. I can still use the Larousse books when I have time to sit down with her but I am constantly on a lookout for books that she could just explore on her own when I am busy. You have probably never heard of them but they are fantastic. If you happen to have bilingual kids (Spanish) like some of my friends, you are lucky because you can check out these translations.  (More titles are below that book on Amazon so take a look at them). I have never found an English version, which is a shame, but I have discovered some books that our kids have been enjoying for years.

Let’s start with books that you can look at with even very young kids (Scroll down to the end of this list for funny books):

People
PeopleI bought this book when my daughter was 3 and it’s been among our favorites since then. This review from Amazon says it all:

What a wonderful way to introduce the many peoples of the world! This is a fabulous book that presents all of the peoples of the world and is successful at making children think about the differences between them. Hopefully it will develop the empathy that is so needed in this world today.

Me On the Map
me on the mapMy husband is into maps; he can never walk past a map without stopping and looking at it. He always tests our kids whenever we have a map with us, whether we are hiking  or visiting an amusement park, if they know where we are and where we are headed. So one of the first non-fiction books we got was Me On the Map. It is a good introduction to the concept of maps.
On the subject of geography—my daughter was very excited about The Amazing Pop-Up Geography Book. pop up geography bookShe even took it off the shelf the other day to look at it with her friend.
Speaking of great pop-up books, I must mention Robert Crowther’s Pop-Up House of Inventions.
popup house of inventionsI don’t understand why the recommended age range is 6-9. I like to look it myself and learn some fascinating facts. Here is an extract from an Amazon review:

Turn the book in your hands. Hold it so that the spine is at the top and that when you open it you reveal the first scene properly. Immediately you are plunged into a fully stocked and operating kitchen. Every object has a tiny fact attached to it explaining when it was invented or at least conjured up. Multiple tiny flaps reveal even more facts and surprises. Lift up the rug and not only will you see a wad of chewing gum stuck to the floor but you’ll also learn when gum was invented and how it was first marketed as “Blibber-Blubber Bubble Gum”. Opening each door and lifting each flap the reader makes their way through other rooms in the house. And even if you look under something or behind it, you’re sure to see your curiosity rewarded with more facts, more secrets, and more objects. Finally, after walking through a living room, bathroom, bedroom, and garage, you come to a listing of “Some Inventions That Changed the Way We Live”. Chronologically you can learn about inventions aiding in Food, Heat and Light, Plumbing, and Communication through each important historical era. Exhausting and intensive doesn’t quite do it justice.

Encyclopedia Mythologica: Gods and Heroes Pop-Up
gods and heros popupAlthough my kids have not had a chance to look at it, I have viewed this pop-up book on Youtube and put it on our Christmas list for this year. Matthew Reinhart’s art is just incredible.

I have only recently come across this book that is awesome:

I know the following two do not exactly belong here but I couldn’t think of a better spot for them. We have them shelved with non-fiction books because the kids just pull them out and read any part of the book they please, exactly like almanacs and encyclopedias. They both love them.
